This morning, the Greater Sage Grouse. Other birds to look for in the area are Sage Thrasher and Mountain Bluebirds. Before reaching Hayden we'll keep a look out for such mountain species as Cassin's Finch, Pine Siskins, Evening Grosbeaks, Stellars Jay and Townsend Solitaires. The afternoon will be spent looking for Blue Grouse.
Overnight: CraigLEK in Coalmont: Car park is 150 yards form lek (P.17) Saturday the 31st at 6 am I found a Sage Grouse lek not listed, but close to one in the guide. There were at least 42 (31 male, 11 female) Grouse participating. I searched for and found no Grouse at the four lek locations in the guide. Directions: From Craig take Rte. 13 north to CR 3. West on CR 3 2.1 mi. to dirt road leading north just before second cattle guard. The lek is visible, though distant, looking north from this point. Those with high clearance vehicles should be able to drive north approx. 1/2 mi. to a fence marked Private Property. The road up to that point, I believe, is on public land. (P.15)
