White-headed Woodpecker |
We got out of our motel this morning at 5:10 am. We headed to Mary's Peak with one goal in mind - seeing a Sooty Grouse. We got there shortly after dawn and started looking and looking and looking. Time went by with no luck. Then at about 9 am - success! It was a lifer for several people. Once we left Mary's Peak we headed to Finley NWR which was an entirely new habitat for us on the trip. From there we headed east towards Sisters stopping at Lost Lake. The birding there was great: Barrow's Goldeneye, Hermit Warbler, MacGilvrays's Warbler and both kinglets. From there we drove to our housing near the town of Sisters. When we pulled in to register, on the feeders were Pinyon Jays, a White-headed Woodpecker, a Pygmy Nuthatch and a pair of Mountain Chickadees. It was amazing. |
